BASIC RULES FOR THE USE AND SAFETY OF CARVING TOOLS
These rules must be followed by both amateur and professional sculptors.
As a general rule, right-handed people use their right hand to and left-handed people use their left hand to guide the gouge so the guiding hand indicates the direction of the cut. Thus, the cutting angle, cutting direction and working pressure for chip removal are determined. While the cut is being made, the other hand secures and protects the gouge.
The hand helps to find and execute the start of the cut safely. In addition, it ensures that the cut is made on time and at the desired depth.
Of course, the illustrations are only an aid and don‘t have to be imitated in exactly the same way. However, the basic posture or orientation does not deviate from the design model significantly.
